ROMANOV MYSTERY SOLVED
For nine decades history buffs, royalists as well as all kinds of controversy theorists have been searching for the remains of the last two children (Alexei and Maria) of Russia’s Czar Nicholas II. Nicholas and his family were detained in 1917 when Bolshevik revolution swept the country and were shot by a firing squad in July 1918 in the basement of their Yekaterinburg residence where they were kept.
Rumors were flying for years claiming that some of the family have miraculously survived and escaped Russia. Declarations from women to be Anastasia were especially well-known (with Hollywood films and Broadway shows, and even the Disney making a cartoon about the lost youngest Romanov daughter making it a famous story), however there were also people claiming to be Alexei and Maria.
The remains of the Czar, Czarina Alexandra and three of their children, including Princess Anastasia, were found in 1991 however there were no traces of Alexei, an heir to the thrown, and his sister Maria. Until now…
On Wednesday, the scientists announced that DNA tests, conducted on the bones unearthed last summer in the forest near Yekaterinburg, confirmed the identities as those of Crown Prince Alexei and his sister, Grand Duchess Maria. Eduard Rossel, governor of the region, said that the remains are indeed the ones of the children and now the whole Romanov family has been found.
The genetic material extracted from the bone shards was compared with that of Empress Alexandra, who was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and a distant relative the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip. Funny how all the royal families of Europe seem to be related…
The discovery is still to be recognized by the descendants of the Romanovs, however will it put all the theories about the pretender to the Russian throne to rest?
