“Vampire Diaries”, Season 2
I wasn’t going to write about this season’s “Vampire Diaries” (since I am sure there
are plenty of blog posts out there) but this seems like an excellent venue to express my frustration with the show.
First of all, Stefan as a villain didn’t quite sit well with me from the very beginning. People simply aren’t that black and white. But then again, Stefan and Damon aren’t quite people, are they? And since I decided to give it a chance, I couldn’t very well start complaining at once, now could I? Then I realized that Paul Wesley is a very convincing villain and not quite one-dimensional (as I was afraid). A villain we’d love to hate but can’t quite manage for we know there is depth to him and many a layer to peel. The same is true for Damon, as a matter of fact, which actually makes the whole brotherly relationship more complicated and therefore more real.
So here I was last night watching the latest episode, expecting to be on the edge of my seat biting my nails (as was the case with the last season), and yet again I was sorely disappointed. And here lie the rub, really. The season is good, don’t get me wrong. And there are a lot of interesting aspects to it; otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting in front of my TV set every Thursday night, would I? Well, perhaps I would; just to admire this beautiful young man (Wesley)…
However, there is also something missing, isn’t there? As much as the creators promise the edge-of-the-cliff experience, they come short of actually achieving their boastful goal. Well, to be honest, there were a few moments there involving Claus and the Originals when I was close to biting my nails but it never seems to last. There simply isn’t enough suspense.
Many times, it seems they would start a storyline just to drop it one or two episodes later. Is our attention span really that bad these days? Or do they (and by ‘they’ I mean the creators of the show) simply presume the audience cannot follow and stay interested in one storyline for more than 5 minutes at a time? Which I myself find terribly insulting.
So am I going to continue to watch “Vampire Diaries”? Of course! Because, all in all, it’s not too shabby.
THE GAME OF THRONES
This is an undeniably magnificent HBO original series! It is based on the first book in the series of epic fantasy novels, “The Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin. And for all the fantasy fans, this is an absolute gem! The TV series grabs your attention from the very first scene [...]
DAN BROWN “THE LOST SYMBOL”, PART II
As much as I liked all previous Dan Brown novels, I must admit that all in all, I am fairly disappointed in “The Lost Symbol”. First of all, the action was a bit slow to pick up tempo. It finally did (about half-way through the book) and then it was quite in Dan Brown’s style. Secondly, for [...]
